奄美大島は1953年まで米国統治下（1945年に終戦したにもかかわらず）という独特の歴史を持つ。大島紬は世界三大織物のひとつで、島の土と泥で染める泥染めは奄美だけの技法。地元料理のけいはん（鶏飯）は奄美の魂。UNESCO世界自然遺産のマングローブ林でカヤック。
